MARC AND ANDRESSA - A CELEBRATION OF LOVE

A styled shoot for Workshops by Lark at Blackfriars Priory in Gloucester.

THE CONCEPT

Modern and romantic, taking influence from the 13th century medieval setting and Mediterranean feel of the venue.

STATIONERY

Playing with contrasts of soft textures and straight edges, modern type and organic calligraphy, and layers of vellum. Weaving hand-drawn line illustrations throughout, and a muted colour palette.

INVITATION

Loose, organic calligraphy, paired with minimalist modern typography, and line drawings of the flowers in the bouquet and tablescape. I used a muted colour palette, of subtle neutrals and blush, with richer accents.

MAP

I wanted the map to be delicate, and soft, in a way that is similar to the vows. Simple line drawings of key places in Gloucester to guide guests to the venue and printed on a very fine, hand-made paper to give it a floaty, fabric-like texture. 

DETAILS

The monastery was a scriptorium – which translates as ‘a place for writing’, where the monks wrote, copied, and illuminated manuscripts. On the walls are these fantastic drawings graffitied into the stone – perhaps they were self-portraits by a daydreaming monk! We wanted to incorporate these drawings into the stationery and so I traced their graffiti into line drawings and set them against a rough hand-painted watercolour paper, overlayed with translucent vellum.

MENUS

For the menus I layered vellum over watercolour and illustration, to complement the stationery. I found little elements of the Priory that excited me – little corners and nooks, the grand fireplaces, the leaded windows, the masonry, and used these as line drawings layered underneath the Italian feast menu.

VOWS

For the vows, I wanted to create something romantic, flowy, ethereal. I had some linen fabric left from another project and tore it up into small pieces and frayed the edges. Experimenting with the same soft organic calligraphy writing directly onto the cloth, and creating beautiful, delicate love letters.
